Reinforced Concrete Dome for a Housing Project
The concrete dome is part of the roof for a housing project in the Philippines. The dome is very efficient structurally especially in resisting the forces of nature such as typhoon and earthquake. The criteria for the design of the dome was intended to withstand severe storms with wind speeds reaching up to 290 mph.
The loadings and design procedure were based on the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP 2015). Both extreme cases of wind and earthquake were adopted to ensure resilience of the structure under the most critical conditions.
Software package SAP2000 was used to generate the structural model, obtain the stresses and design the dome structure. The wall elements are not part of the scope of design and were only included in the model for completeness of loading and stiffness.
